An official from Advanced Micro Devices said at a conference that the chipmaker will unveil its long-anticipated quad-core processors code-named Barcelona in September or October, which may be considered as another delay by many observers and customers of the world’s second largest maker of microprocessors. A news-story at Fudzilla web-site claims that Ed Fisher, vice president of marketing at AMD, said at Digital Consumer Channel conference in Croatia that quad-core AMD Opteron microprocessors code-named Barcelona will “come” in September or October, which is later than the company was expected to deliver its new server processors featuring new-generation micro-architecture. Earlier AMD’s chief financial officer Robert Rivet was reported to have said that quad-core AMD Opteron processors would be introduced in July or August. Some companies familiar with the original launch schedule of AMD’s code-named Barcelona processor have also indicated that they expected to have servers running AMD’s quad-core chips in July. Quad-core AMD Opteron processors code-named Barcelona are based on the company’s next-generation micro-architecture and will be produced using 65nm process technology. Among the highlights of AMD’s new chips the manufacturer lists shared 2MB L3 cache, 128-bit floating point units (FPU), SSE4A instructions, support for dual-channel DDR2 memory and other innovations. AMD’s public relations officials did not respond to emails seeking for comments.
